Kinky Friendman 1944-2024
In the summer of 2021, Kinky Friedman invited me into his home at Echo Hill Ranch; and graciously let me interview him. We spoke for 3 hours. We had shots. We laughed. He shared stories, and he played (live) a song he had written just the night before. (Banjo, Sophie, and Me).

Even though I did not “know” him, he had an impact on me. I shared my experience of that day with anyone who would listen. He let me play four of his songs, when I released that interview. He even PREFERRED that I use the Willie Nelson version of one of them. He was Kind.

He was hilarious.
He was rough, brash, sincere, & vulnerable.
I have thought of my time with him often & will carry those hours with me forever. His interview is some of “my” best work. His 2 part episode rises above most of my endeavors. I have combined them for you (the listener) here.

In this episode we chat about: her time on the television talent show Star Search, some of the cool people she has worked with including Lorrie Morgan and previous guest BJ Thomas. Kelly also shares a story about her struggle with breast cancer, and her new song ‘I’m Not Going Anywhere’; which is currently being used in a national advertising campaign for a nationwide hospital system. It’s a touching and moving song, and she lets me play it on the show. Enjoy!

Take a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Janelle Arthur. Janelle is a country singer & songwriter in Nashville, and 5th place finalist on season 12 of American Idol. In this episode, we chat about her first job ever (as a 7 year old) working at Dollywood portraying a young Dolly Parton, and her experience auditioning & being on American Idol. Then we talk about her first ever movie Runnin From My Roots, where she played the lead role. Lastly we discuss her new single Hand Me Downs and how she was able to get Dolly Parton to sing it as a duet with her. She does let me play that song, as well as the title track from her film Runnin’ From My Roots. This is a sweet, genuine, and generous young lady, and I had a great time speaking with her.
