Kinky Friendman 1944-2024
In the summer of 2021, Kinky Friedman invited me into his home at Echo Hill Ranch; and graciously let me interview him. We spoke for 3 hours. We had shots. We laughed. He shared stories, and he played (live) a song he had written just the night before. (Banjo, Sophie, and Me).

Even though I did not “know” him, he had an impact on me. I shared my experience of that day with anyone who would listen. He let me play four of his songs, when I released that interview. He even PREFERRED that I use the Willie Nelson version of one of them. He was Kind.

He was hilarious.
He was rough, brash, sincere, & vulnerable.
I have thought of my time with him often & will carry those hours with me forever. His interview is some of “my” best work. His 2 part episode rises above most of my endeavors. I have combined them for you (the listener) here.

Take a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Greg Payne. Greg is the host of; The Cool Grandpa Podcast, the author of ‘My Grandpa’s Grandpa’, and a friend. In this episode, we chat about the experiences Greg had with his grandparents, growing up, that made him want to start a podcast dedicated to grandfathers. We exchange stories about our respective grandparents, and we discuss what drew Greg to podcasting in general. Greg touches on some of the early difficulties of starting his own show, and how its going now. Then we talk about the new children’s book: My Grandpa’s Grandpa. This is a sweet story about a grandson who doesn’t want to go to sleep, and stretches bedtime out by asking his grandpa, about HIS grandpa. This is a heartwarming story that came from Greg’s actual life (more or less), and it is perfectly executed in this children’s book. All along the way, we trade stories about podcasting, getting older, who this book & podcast are for, and of course, grandparents!

Take a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know C.J. Pierce. C.J. is the founding guitarist for the platinum selling rock / metal band, Drowning Pool. In this episode, we chat about how the band formed, and how they got their first record label contract. Then we talk about the insane success of their first album, Sinner, which was certified platinum six weeks after it was released. Then we touch on the mega-hit ‘Bodies’, and how it keeps popping up in popular culture. It was featured in a recent episode of Queen Latifah’s television show The Equalizer (on CBS), and it was just used by Shaquille O’Neal in his latest rap single release. Obviously, we discuss Ryan McCombs’ return to front Drowning pool, and their latest tour. The SNAFU tour begins in early September, and is a national tour featuring: Drowning Pool, Saliva, Adalita’s Way, and Any Given Sin. Drowning Pool’s newest album, 2022’s Strike A Nerve, was not handled very well by their at the time record label, so C.J., explains their decision to become an independent band. Lastly, we each share a Pantera story or two, as C.J. is friends with some of those guys. He is kind enough to let me play the title track from the newest album: Strike A Nerve, and I it is as Drowning Pool as it could possibly be! Go see them on The SNAFU tour!

In this episode, we chat about her being the child of immigrant parents and growing up on the East Coast. We talk about what their hopes for their children were; and how those hopes panned out. Then we discuss some of her film projects, and some of her theatrical works. I ask tons of questions about working with Dule Hill, Giancarlo Esposito, and the great Mario Van Peebles; and she explains how she restrains herself from acting like a smitten schoolgirl in front of these talented dreamboats! Finally, Gisela tells us everything we need to know about this new touring revival production of 1776; where she plays Sam Adams. Plus, we talk about the diverse nature of this cast, and why this kind of ‘out of the box’ casting is necessary.

Born and raised in Ukraine, Natasha felt drawn to learn English at an early age and found an escape in acting not long after. As the character “Ice” from the iconic reality competition TV show American Gladiators; Lori Fetrick kicked ass and took names. In this episode, we chat about her early life, growing up in ‘the church’, and how this monstor competitor was created! She tells us about her insane work ethic, her never ending motivation, and what led her to seek out one of the oddest jobs of the early 1990’s. Lori shares how she became an American Gladiator, some of her fun stories about being a Gladiator, and what she has been doing since then. There are T-W-O recent documentaries about the American Gladiators, and she breaks them both down. One of them is a bizarre puff piece about the creator, and one is an actual legit docu-series about the show and the team. Finally, l grill Lori about her new podcast “Chillin’ With Ice”. We nerd out a little about podcasting in general, and then she explains why she started a podcast, and what she hopes to share with her listeners. I had so much fun with “Ice” that I can’t imagine she won’t come back on to discuss season two!

Take a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know New York based stand up comedian Mike Cotayo. In this episode we chat about the drunk driving accident that Mike was in when he was just 18 months old, and the disabilities he was left with as a result of that traumatic brain injury. We also talk extensively about his varied and heavy drug use; including which is his favorite drug and why. We chat a little about what made Mike become a social worker (MSW) with a masters degree from NYU. Then we get into why he thinks comedy is important, how it may have saved his life, and why making people laugh is so important to him. He shares some stories about being an extra on Saturday Night Live, winning Showtime At The Apollo, and what bombing as a comic means to him. Mike is putting together a stand up comedy festival as part of a 501c3, and what he hopes to accomplish with it. It’s called “Stand Up If You Can”, and I think it has a great purpose.
